Popis: Contemporary society faces multiple challenges, such as the rapidly growing human population and climate change, which require the urgent adoption of smart solutions leading to enhanced sustainability. The use of novel and innovative technologies, including smart approaches to bio-based production, holds the promise to bridge the gap between economic growth and environmental sustainability. In this sense, the biological production of added-value compounds (e.g., biofuels, bulk and fine chemicals, and biomaterials) from renewable resources has become an attractive route to replace unsustainable oil-based chemical synthesis. Much effort has been devoted to the construction of microbial cell factories through metabolic engineering approaches, yet the number of bioprocesses that have reached a commercial scale is still relatively low due to their limited profitability. In this chapter, we discuss advanced metabolic engineering strategies that can be applied for the construction of the next generation of bacterial factories to facilitate the development of sustainable processes.
