Publisher Summary This chapter focuses on radiation by atoms in resonant cavities. In a study described in the chapter, the time-dependence of the excited atomic state was investigated by using Laplace transform methods. Its decay amplitude can be approximated by a sum of complex exponential functions exp(S j t) in which the coefficients were can be determined by solving a complex generalization of the familiar secular equation for a system of coupled oscillators. The procedures applied to cavity couplings of all sorts are most easily dealt with. When the modes are not too closely spaced in frequency, the secular equation is algebraic and had been solved directly. If the modes are closely spaced, on the other hand, the atom would tend to interact with relatively few of the multiple reflections its radiated field generates within the cavity. |
