Popis: | Long straight alkane chains have been functionalized with sulphur-containing groups at chain-end and mid-chain locations. The behaviour of such compounds in Langmuir films has been investigated. Most form stable monolayers from which molecular areas can be determined. Two sulphoxides RSO-p-tolyl and R'SO(CH2)10CO2H show pressure-area (π-A) characteristics very different from the classical stearic acid curve and are explained in terms of molecular reorganization at the aqueous surface. Attempts were made to deposit Langmuir-Blodgett multilayers of the chiral form of RSO-p-tolyl but these were unsuccessful as a result of crystallite formation on the surface of the quartz substrate. |
