( Accepred 25 Augusr 1989) Summary-A potting medium was used to demonstrate the biological control potential of ~richodernra har5unum against damping-off of lettuce (Lacrucu su~iro) caused by Pyrhiunt u/rin~un~. Introduction of T. har:icmrtnr but not P. ul(intum into the medium caused an immediate increase in the ATP and chitin contents followed by a rapid decline. By contrast, initial increases in ergosterol concentration and esterase activity on fluorescein diacctate were followed by inconsistent and extremely variable responses with duration of incubation. The colony-forming units (cfu) of Trichoclcrmra increased on amendment and were sustained whereas the increased units of the P. ulrintum-only treatment were reduced by T. hcrr.-icmunr. Respiration incrcascd for ? days after amendment and then declined. It is concluded that ATP and chitin measurements arc suitable hiomars markers for introduced fungal inocula and are inversely associated with cfus and estcrase-activity mcasurcments. Both types of mcasuremcnt arc useful in investigating discuse potential and biocontrol activity. Riocontrol activity is primarily linked to a transient increase in Tricl~u&rnru biomass resulting in a sustained increase in active propagulcs of the antagonist. |
