Incorporating evidence-based principles to multimedia platforms has been demonstrated to benefit learning outcomes. This study will investigate whether implementing a pretraining will increase learning outcomes for a lesson on how to use pipettes in immersive virtual reality. College students will be randomly assigned to either a pretraining condition or a control condition. Those in the pretraining condition will watch a pretraining video whereas those in the control condition will not watch a pretraining video. The pretraining video demonstrates the components in the pipettes and how they operate. Next, all participants will be taught the scientific procedures of pipetting in an immersive virtual reality (IVR) environment, including how to use pipettes to transfer a small amount of liquid from one container to another. Following IVR, all participants will take an in-person pipetting performance test and a pipetting knowledge test. Lastly, all participants will also complete surveys in which rate their cognitive load, sense of presence, and self-efficacy. |
