Popis: The U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) are working jointly to launch a major new Earth observing mission in the 2022–2023 timeframe. The NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) mission will carry an L-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) instrument provided by NASA and an S-band SAR instrument provided by ISRO. Both instruments are designed for surface deformation and change measurements that support natural hazard science and applications. Here we describe the instruments, mission operations, and science and applications requirements, and relate how the NISAR mission will benefit natural hazard monitoring.
