Popis: | Living with a loved one with an eating disorder can have a significant impact on the mental and physical health of individual family members. Carers frequently report that they lack the skills and resources required to care for their offspring with an eating disorder. The manner in which the family attempts to reduce the symptoms may inadvertently play a role in maintaining or aggravating the problems. This article discusses the dissemination of information between professionals and family carers in collaborative skills sharing programmes. Initial training programmes were delivered via a series of workshops. The workshops were designed to instigate behavioural change by teaching alternative communication patterns and coping strategies through the principles of motivational interviewing. The didactic content of the workshops has since been transferred to a series of DVDs supplemented by telephone coaching sessions. It is hoped that the latter will address the difficulties of time constraints and/or geographical inaccessibility, as well as providing an economically feasible alternative in situations where availability and resources are scarce. |
