A compact form for the hot plasma dispersion reaction accurate for both the fast wave and the ion Bernstein waves (for all ranges of k1ρi) is obtained. The dispersion relation is used to obtain three-dimensional ray equations for a tokamak geometry incorporating parabolic density and temperature profiles, the 1/R variation in the toroidal magnetic field, and the poloidal magnetic field variation. The results yield information concerning the spatial deposition of the fast wave energy coupled via mode conversion to ion Bernstein waves. We then present studies of the startup phase of tokamak reactors utilizing waves in the ion cyclotron frequency range. Both coil and cavity aperture coupling systems are considered in the NUWMAK reactor design. The wave launching structures are designed to be compatible with the high neutron flux emanating from the plasma and access constraints imposed by a high field, high density, minimum size tokamak reactor. |
