Pyrolysis-photoionization mass spectrometry with coherent vacuum-ultraviolet radiation was used to study ethylene-methyl acrylate copolymers having a wide range of compositions and molecular weights. Samples were pyrolyzed under vacuum with a fast heating rate of ≈4 °C s −1 in the source of the mass spectrometer. The mass spectra were found to reflect changes in the methyl acrylate incorporation, though not in a straightforward fashion. Chemometric analysis (Partial Least Squares) was performed on the spectra in order to create a model for prediction of copolymer composition in the range of 2.8 mol.% methyl acrylate to 20.5%. The method was found to determine copolymer composition accurately and expediently, though with limited ability to discriminate against blends of copolymer with homopolymers of either component. |
