Popis: | This article presents findings from an exploratory study of the impact of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) on the welfare of rural families in Mexico. NAFTA's devastating effect on Mexican agriculture has led to an unprecedented migration of people from the Mexican countryside to the United States, with serious consequences to the women and children left behind in rural Mexico. Participant observation in a Mexican child welfare center and interviews of 65 Mexican women were conducted. Findings include the importance of documents to the family left behind; the change in scale of emigration; and the structural nature of solutions given by the women interviewed. Transnational child welfare policy implications and solutions based on rural practice concepts are presented. |
