Popis: | This study is aimed at determining the effectiveness of random inclusion of jute fibres on the strength characteristics of two different clayey soils. Fibre length and percentage inclusion in soil mass were taken as the initial study parameters. Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS) and California Bearing Ratio (CBR) tests were carried out to determine the strength parameters of the reinforced soil. Experimental results were then used to model the reinforced soil as embankment fills in finite element software programs PLAXIS 2D and SLIDE, to determine the safety factors. Results showed that the random distribution of jute fibres had positive effects on both strength parameters and the safety factors. The optimum fibre lengths and their respective percentage inclusions were then established. A mathematical expression, relating the UCS values to the fibre length and percentage inclusion was modelled from the experimental data using linear least square regression method in MATLAB. The data from the FEM software programs were compared with the mathematical expression, and it was observed that the expression held true for various strength parameter values, hence validating the expressions generated. |
