Background : Borisav Stankovic is a Serbian writer who wrote at the beginning of the 20th century. He broke a traditional thread in Serbian literature and introduced a great number of modernistic elements in Serbian realistic novels. For this reason many scholars ,who analyse Stankovic’s work, have a problem to determine the period to which he belongs. Purpose: The main purpose of this paper is to emphasize modernistic elements in the most popular novel of Bora Stankovic “Necista krv”. The special attention will be committed to a new type of a heroine who is not only psychologically illuminated, but also has a role of “reflector”. Everything that is happening in the novel is prevaded through the prism of her feelings and her sensual experience. Due to the characterization of the heroine in relation to her body, the special attention will be given to the role of the body in the novel. It is also important to point out the dominant erotic elements that can be analyzed from the point of view of the psychoanalytic theory. This is Stankovic’s modernistic tendency and the question arises from whether he knew about Freud's theory of personality and whether he referred Sophia's condition to "what" which he could associate with Freud’s ‘ID’. The question of the form is inevitable. The traditional form is damaged by modernistic content, which is confirmed by the negative judgments of contemporary and critics. The aim of this paper is to emphasise innovations that Stankovic brings into the Serbian novel, both in terms of themes and the way in which he depicts the personality of his characters. Results: According to the detail analysis of Stankovic’s work and the judgement of critics it can be concluded that the novel 'Necista krv' is the first modernistic echo in Serbian literature.The choice of the theme, the characterization of the characters and their position in the novel as well as the deep psychoanalysis classify the novel 'Necista krv' into the category of modern novels.
