Popis: The blackspot seabream Pagellus bogaraveo (Brünnich, 1768), is an economically important and a main targeted fishery species in the Strait of Gibraltar. In order to address overfishing issues and to set up an efficient management plan for a sustainable exploitation, the life cycle of this species was investigated for the first time in the Moroccan Mediterranean seawaters of the Strait of Gibraltar. From July 2018 to June 2019, a total of 756 specimens of blackspot seabream were randomly sampled from commercial catches landed in the port of Tangier (35°47′N-5°48′W). The main biological parameters investigated were length and weight, gonadal differentiation, sexual maturity, spawning season and sex change. Protandrous hermaphroditism was the prevalent sexual pattern with low occurrence of gonochorism. Sex ratio was 1:2.21 (M: F) and skewed towards females which were predominant in the larger size classes. First sexual maturity for males and females sex combined was reached at L50 = 31.48 cm. The species displayed a short spawning season (January-March). The results were compared with the ones from the west Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean and allowed the suggestion of preliminary management measures for the fishery, including a seasonal closure during the peak of the spawning season (January-February) and the establishment of a larger minimum landing size in Morocco (32 cm TL).
