Popis: An approach to the design of hard real-time system software, specifically operating system kernels, is suggested. It is pragmatic in nature: using an usual non-real-time off-the-shelf software development tool, system routines are developed, debugged and pre-tested using breakpoints, code tracing, etc. Within the tool, a process environment simulator is integrated, which is independent of the target control system. To test system software under design, a system-architecture-specific interface must be composed to emulate the behaviour of the hardware and system interconnections, and to bind the routines with the simulator and among themselves. The simulator allows for simulation and recording of events and of intermediate states. Different situations and specific scenarios can easily be set up and the response verified. The behaviour is displayed visually within corresponding windows and can be traced back using the data recorded. When ready, the actual system routines’ code is compiled with an ordinary and simple target system compiler.
