The Arrhenius parameters of several solvolysis of benzyl chloride have been measured. As expected, the experimental data do not verify the SN1 Winstein-Grunwald linear relationship. The deviations are expounded on the basis of a new concept “nucleophilic action” δN, which is related to the rate (k;) of the actual process (SN2) and to the rate (η) which should be observed if the solvolysis did follow a SN1 mechanism: δN = log k — logk′ The discussion is extended to linear relationships of the Winstein-Grunwald type, corresponding to SN2 solvolysis occuring in solvents which differ only in respect to the proportions of the components. |
