Rydberg series of atomic He by opto-galvanic spectroscopy

Popis: Atomic helium transitions from its metastable 2s 1 S state to high n p 1 P ( n = 14 to 36) Rydberg states have been observed via opto-galvanic spectroscopy for the first time. The observed transition frequencies agree well with predictions of quantum defect theory indicating the states are not strongly perturbed internally or by their environment. The levels are slightly broadened by He collisions and stray electric fields.
