Popis: The Japanese Society for Cardiovascular Surgery (JSCVS) organized a new association “U-40” for young members in 2012. The U-40 comprises the young members (< 40 years) of the JSCVS, and has 8 regions as the same regional structure of the JSCVS. One director and several managers of U-40 are selected in each region. The activity of U-40 has been mainly managed by the director and managers of U-40 and supervised by the committee of the JSCVS. The main object of U-40 is to communicate the opinions of young cardiovascular surgeons directly to the executive council. The executive council comprise of councilors, most of whom are over 50 years of age. Therefore, councilors felt difficulty to represent the young surgeons' opinions and ideas to the executive council. After the establishment of U-40, the director of the U-40 has been allowed to attend the executive council as an observer. U-40 is trying to accumulate the opinions of many young Japanese cardiovascular surgeons through their activities. The U-40 holds regional training programs called the U-40 Basic Lecture Courses (BLCs). BLCs have been held in each region and managed by the U-40 regional managers themselves. Each BLC consists of academic sessions in the morning and Dry & Wet Skill Laboratory sessions in the afternoon in the weekend. All training programs are organized by young surgeons themselves, and senior surgeons who are councilors and representative of the region support the BLCs. The U-40 also conducts surveillance of the training and working environment of young surgeons in Japan. The organizational principle of U-40 is “Seek 3 Smiles”; the “3” means “Patients,” “Medical Staffs” and “Cardiovascular Surgeons.” U-40 has just started functional activities. We are considering that introduction of more effective activities are required to assemble opinions and to improve the training environment for young surgeons. Furthermore, we intend to collaborate with overseas associations for young surgeons to implement such activities globally
