A fundamental challenge of our collective response to climate change is shifting from an economy and society built on fossil fuels to one centered on renewable energy and electrification. This energy transition will require massive policy changes and broad-based support if we are to successfully avoid the most disastrous effects of climate change. While the benefits of this transition are clear, these changes may be threatening to some privileged members of society. Building on its explanatory power in domains like race relations, trade policy, and the 2016 election this project examines the role of status threat on opposition to renewable energy. Status threat occurs when members of a dominant group perceive their position in the social hierarchy is being challenged. Focusing on a key energy battleground, the American Upper Midwest, this project employs a survey experiment to explore the impacts of status threat. Using a factorial design with status threat(and not) and differing frames(economic, racial, neutral) the experiment employs a convenience sample from TurkPrime of 1200 respondents. |
