To date, there has been minimal focus in research on the intersection of aging and gender identity. However, this is quickly becoming a burgeoning area of exploration. It is known that transgender and gender diverse (TGD) people are at great risk for a host of physical and mental health issues, due to the unique experiences of discrimination and abuse faced by this population. Much of the research on the aging process is conducted from a cisgender-normative perspective, which leaves out examination of the lives of TGD older adults. This chapter focuses specifically on examining the research landscape with regard to identifying issues related to the experience of TGD elders. We argue that although there is significant evidence that TGD elders are vulnerable to unique risks, there are resilient individuals who have adapted to these challenges. Further, recent laws and public policies have begun to help to protect and improve the lives of older TGD people in the future. As such, we will explore recommendations for improvements in research, healthcare, and policies moving forward into the coming years. |
