Popis: In BOLD-based fMRI, the time interval between tissue excitation and signal measurement (echo time, TE) is set to optimize the contrast between oxygenated and deoxygenated blood, which is maximal at TE ≈ T2*. However, BOLD sensitivity is also influenced by additional TE-dependent factors, such as physiological noise, signal dropout and ratio of parenchymal to venous signal and optimal BOLD sensitivity might therefore not necessarily be observed at TE ≈ T2*. While the exact relationship between TE and BOLD sensitivity has been established in the brain, it is currently unknown in the spinal cord. In order to provide an empirical basis for choosing an optimal TE in spinal cord fMRI, we will measure task-induced spinal cord BOLD responses with fMRI across several different TEs. Our experimental design will furthermore allow us to assess the reliability of spinal cord BOLD responses across separate days and investigate spatial aspects of thermal stimulation.
