Careful Raman-scattering studies were carried out on AlO(OH) gels prepared by the Yoldas technique, using the position and lineshape of the characteristic boehmite band near 360 cm−1 as a marker of the structural progress of the sol-gel reaction. At short reaction times, the band is shifted and asymmetrically broadened with respect to the bulk-crystal line; with increasing time, it sharpens and approaches the crystal-band position. We interpret these results in terms of finite-size effects of nanocrystallinity (microcrystal dimensions of order 10 nm) on the Raman lineshape. These experiments demonstrate that Raman scattering is effective for monitoring microcrystal sizes in sol-gel systems, and provides a tool for investigating the kinetics of microcrystallite growth. |
