An alternate coagulant-flocculent system using volclay, polysolisic acid, and chitosan was used to remove secondary poultry nutrients (SPN) from the wastewater stream of a turkey processing plant. The solids were dehydrated and/or extruded, producing different types of SPN samples. They were tested at levels up to 15% in broiler starter diets. In Experiment 1, broiler body weight at 3 wk was depressed (P>.05) at all levels of SPN feeding, and feed conversion was significantly increased. In Experiment 2 (using extruded SPN products); no significant differences were detected among the diets. In Experiment 3, body weights at 3 wk were depressed for SPN contributions above 6% for the non-pre-dried, extruded SPN product (SPN-EXT). Feed conversion was not significantly increased by the SPN from products which had been partially dried prior to extrusion. SPN can be used at levels up to 4% in broiler diets without affecting either body weight or feed conversion. |
