Popis: Semotilus thoreauianus Jordan differs from S. atromaculatus Mitchill, with which it has been confused and synonymized, in having larger and fewer lateral line scales (45-52 vs 48-58 in S. atromaculatus); a smaller, stouter body; a wider, more diffuse lateral stripe (well defined in S. atromaculatus); the dorsal-fin origin behind the pelvic-fin origin (directly over the pelvic-fin origin in S. atromaculatus); shorter, wider fins; fewer, larger breeding tubercles; and yellow fins during the breeding season (rose or pink in S. atromaculatus). Semotilus thoreauianus is found in Gulf Coast drainages from Mobile Bay east to the Ochlockonee River. Semotilus thoreauianus and S. atromaculatus occur syntopically in the Black Warrior and Cahaba river systems.
