Popis: Topical administration of a mixture of APIs and antibacterial metals has been considered as a practical solution for local treatment of skin diseases. In this regard, we have developed a series of new coordination compounds (CCs) based on azelaic acid and using three different metal ions i.e., silver, zinc and copper. More than 85% of the API(s) were released from these coordination compounds in a controlled fashion during a 24-hour window which keeps the effective dose of drugs in the medium at an optimal level compared to the conventional dermatological creams. These materials were characterized with FT-IR, PXRD, TGA, CHNOS, ICP-OES and DLS. The antimicrobial activity against two Gram-positive bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Staphylococcus epidermis (S. Epidermis), was investigated by determining the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) values of these compounds. The bacteriostatic activity of silver-based coordination compound (SCC, 3.84 mg/ml) is up to 99.9% against these two bacterial strains which demonstrates a significant improvement compared to the previously reported Bio-MIL5. The insights from this study motivate further research and development towards possible applications of this compound as a material with dermatological properties.
