Popis: The Hydrologic Forecasting System (HFS) is a new generation of computer software developed for real-time flood forecasting. The system, on one hand, makes use of the recent advances in numerical modelling of the rainfall-runoff process and, on the other, of the latest achievements in the field of information technology. The system architecture, which emphasizes its operational aspects, has been designed on the basis of the technical specifications of its first implementation in the People’s Republic of China on the Fuchun River. The HSF is a modular, menu-driven system, written in ANSI FORTRAN 77 and C languages, which operates on any graphical workstation under the UNIX operating system. It provides an integrated approach to river flood modelling starting from the establishment of a hydrometeorological database through calibration of appropriate forecasting models of both a deterministic and stochastic nature, up to the realtime flood forecasting. In this paper, the design and architecture of the HFS is illustrated within the framework of the management of a river basin.
