Cartography is a crucial tool for developing a more thorough understanding of the historical evolution of a territory and its historical heritage. The Lower Guadalquivir and the region surrounding Jerez de la Frontera are regions rich in remains that have been dated to the Phoenician and Roman periods, as well as in hydraulic infrastructures built during the Early Modern Age; these hydraulic infrastructures acted as agents for the transformation of the territory. Subsequently, the Enlightenment attempted to put ‘everything in its place’ and, paradoxically, modern science-based efforts to transform the territory were replaced by an uncertain and nostalgic memory. The present work uses graphic representations of the territory to analyse this change in attitude. This approach is necessary, not only in order to improve our understanding of a specific territorial entity—the lower Guadalquivir Valley and the region around Jerez de la Frontera—but also to examine the role played by graphic representation in the transmission of cultural values. The comparison undertaken between initial and later expressions of a project is key to the historical construction and characterisation of the cultural landscape. |
