BAME students are underrepresented in paramedic science courses. There is limited robust research explaining the low frequency of recruitment into the paramedic service. Recent work by Farquharson (2017) reported the barriers to entering paramedic education for ethnically diverse people including a lack of accessibility, lack of understanding of information related to paramedic education, lack of diversity in ambulance services and the lack of understanding of the role of a paramedic and lack of finance. Further research is needed to understand how these barriers could be overcome in the West Midlands. We intend to implement three workstreams (implemented by MRes students) to identify how to promote inclusive approaches to attract and retain BAME learners into a paramedic career. Workstream 1 aims to identify and implement initiatives within paramedic staff and student recruitment activities. Workstream 2 aims to support the engagement and retention of BAME paramedic students. Workstream 3 aims to create a sustainable leadership progression programme for BAME groups in the West Midlands Ambulance Service (WMAS). |
