Nutraceuticals can be defined as the food or part of food that can be used for the medicinal and healthcare systems. They consist of edible food items that are good for human use and include natural products from plants and animals, vitamins, antioxidants, and flavonoids. The incidence of adverse drug reactions with the use of nutraceuticals is rare but sometimes poor quality ingredients might be used in the manufacturing of nutraceuticals, which is a downside of nutraceutical use. This chapter defines the role of nutraceuticals in the healthcare system, with specialization in respiratory tract disorders such as COPD, asthma, and cough. Current research in the field of nutraceuticals for respiratory diseases is also discussed in this review. It includes current nutraceutical products and the plants that may be used for respiratory disorders. Nutraceuticals are regulated by specific acts and rules that vary from country to country, for example, in India, nutraceuticals are regulated by the Food Safety and Standards Act 2006, whereas in the United States watershed legislation from 1994 regulates the manufacturing and marketing of nutraceuticals. |
