Popis: The objective of the study is to investigate the entrained flow reactor (EFR) technology for biomass gasification, aiming at middle size units (25-100 MW). In this perspective, the EFR could be designed for operation at lower pressure than generally foreseen for EFR, with still a reasonable size. A lower operation temperature than generally performed in an EFR (1400-1500°C) can also be of interest, especially to possibly increase the energy efficiency. Several gasification tests were performed in a pilot-scale EFR at moderate pressure (5-7 bars) and different temperature levels (1100-1400°C) on woody biomass feedstock. The reactor is allothermally heated thanks to a natural gas oxy-burner. For beechwood powder, with a mean upper wall temperature of 1225°C, the biomass conversion into gas is complete, and less than 2% of biomass carbon remains into hydrocarbons, maximizing the H2+CO yield. The cold gas efficiency reaches 116%. An operation temperature under 1400°C can thus be considered. This study will be completed with tests on other types of feedstock, also considering the inorganic behavior, as well as modelling/simulation for a deeper understanding of the thermochemical transformations into the reactor, and for extrapolation to larger scale reactors.
