Kinetics of radical polymerization—LIV. Investigation of the bulk polymerization of p-methyl styrene

Popis: Radical bulk polymerization of p-methyl styrene (pMS) was investigated at 50°, with AIBN initiator. The results of measurements were compared to the relevant data obtained by us for styrene and to those known from the literature, as well as to the polymerization data of the mixture of p- and mMS conventionally known as vinyl toluene. The overall rate constant of pMS was practically equal to that of styrene, but vinyl toluene polymerizes at about 20% higher rate. The rate constant of the elementary initiation reaction was determined by the inhibition method, it was found 1.832 · 10−4 min−1 for pMS. This value is within the limits of error equal to the initiation rate constant measured for styrene, while an almost 40% higher value was obtained for vinyl toluene. The higher rate of the vinyl toluene polymerization is due to the higher rate constant of initiation.
