This paper deals with the existing procedure and methodologies deployed for waste characterisation by taking into account the entire waste management life cycle: from raw waste to waste package disposal acceptance going through waste conditioning controls. The nuclear reprocessing produces High Level wastes (glasses), Intermediary Level Waste Long Lived including process-induced salts and internal structures of the nuclear fuel assembly (cladding, hulls and end-caps) and also Low and Intermediate-level short-lived waste mostly coming from clean-up operations (clothes, tools, gloves, filters, etc.). The paper presents a review of the key factors to be considered in a waste management characterisation program. It will consist of two principal themes: the first dealing with the waste characterisation requirements depending on the category of waste (classification based on life time and level of activity in France) and the second dealing with the most convenient methods used. This paper also addresses the demarche, through the example of elaboration of compacted waste in the ACC device and the dedicated characterisations involved. |
