Hughes Aircraft Company builds a variety of Electro- Optical Systems within its Manufacturing Division inEl Segundo, California. The magnitude of the testing function within the manufacturing cycle of these sys-tems, whether they are a Laser Fire Control System, a Thermal Imaging System, or some type of dedicatedelectronics, is almost beyond measure. Whereas testing was once quite simple, today's more complex productsdemand more complex test strategies. In our typical manufacturing cycle, there are at least nine (9) sepa-rate areas in which testing related to the product (end -item) may be performed. In this paper, an overviewof these test areas will be discussed along with some of the considerations that are necessary for a logicalmanufacturing test strategy.IntroductionProduction testing has tended to play second fiddle to design in past years, but with the mushroomingcosts of manufacturing a complex product, proper test strategy increasingly plays a critical role in winningor losing a program. Important considerations in developing a test strategy include product reliabilitygoals, quantities to be tested, skill levels required of the testers, etc. While a common denominator in any test strategy is cost, it pays to effect a comprehensive strategy thatidentifies failures as early as possible so that unit and system yields for our complex products be as high |
