Four types of sialic acids have so far been isolated, from cattle, sheep, pig and horse material respectively. They are chemically very closely related and seem to differ in respect of substitutional groups only. The constitution of the substances is still unknown. Some characteristic properties and reactions of the acids are described and the constitutional possibilities are discussed. The relationship of the sialic acids to the neuraminic acid described by Klenk is discussed. It seems highly probable that the methoxy-neuraminic acid and the different sialic acids are all derivatives of the same basic substance. |
