Popis: Photocatalytic oxidation is nowadays considered as an ecofriendly process, which has shown to be a promising technique for emerging contaminants removal. Its main advantages are nontoxicity, high stability, lack of mass transfer limitation, possible use of solar light as irradiation source, and operation at ambient temperature. Its main drawbacks are catalyst fouling and recovery. The core of this chapter was focused on the state of art of photocatalytic processes in their application for the removal of emerging contaminants in wastewater treatment. Photocatalysis mechanisms were assessed and the main operating and process parameters that are relevant to the performance of the process, such as pH, light source, contaminant concentration, presence of oxidants, catalyst concentration, among others, were discussed. The most common photocatalysts were also analyzed, as well as the different strategies for improving photocatalysis processes and their future challenges.
