A confluence of research has emerged in recent years indicating that students can learn and thrive when they are in school and classroom contexts in which they feel safe, secure, connected, and cared for—contexts in which their social–emotional competence and academic growth is nurtured and cultivated. This chapter explores efforts to foster caring communities within school systems at both the classroom and school-wide level by drawing from research in the field of social and emotional learning (SEL). First, the case for SEL is put forth, and research demonstrating its effectiveness is delineated. Next, three ingredients for promoting students SEL are put forth. Following, descriptions of several evidence-based SEL programs for promoting students’ as well as teachers’ SEL are presented. The chapter concludes by providing a case study that highlights one dimension of SEL that is central to the creation of caring classroom and school contexts, namely student voice and engagement. |
