Popis: Alliance of therapeutic and diagnostic agents under a single umbrella of “theranostics” have been a boon to the pharmaceutical sector in managing several chronic ailments including cancer, neurological disorders, autoimmune disorders. Developing highly effective therapeutics for neurodegenerative disorders is a burdensome challenge. In presence of a highly selective blood-brain barrier (BBB), which obstructs the movement of therapeutic and diagnostic agents into the brain. Designing disease targeted “nanotheranostics” by integrating the knowledge of nanotechnology with theranostics, have the ability to promote transmigration across the BBB, resulting in improved delivery. Among a plethora of ligands available, aptamers bear a unique property of site-specific targeting by conformationally altering its structure in response to receptors. Recently, DNA/RNA-aptamer conjugated nanotheranostics have been highly investigated for promoting improved prognosis and therapy in neurodegenerative disorders. Hence, considering the current scenario, this review is an attempt to introduce the potential applications of aptamer-nanoconjugates in tackling various neurodegenerative disorders.
