This chapter explores the origins and evolution of physical training, Physical Education (PE) and Physical Development (PD) as official terms in provision for young children’s physical activity, health and well-being. It traces the evolution of provision for PD in the Early Years through to its presence as a “prime area” of learning in the Early Years Foundation Stage framework. Evolution implies change, progress and improvement. The aims of PE in public and elementary schools thus differed: In the boys’ public schools, organised games and athleticism developed into a cult of overriding importance in the education which was provided by those schools. PE after the Second World War slowly evolved to include a wider range of activities. PD involves providing opportunities for young children to be active and interactive; and to develop their co-ordination, control, and movement. |
