The oxidation of oligohydroxyarylenes in an alkaline medium takes place by a reaction that is first order with respect to oligohydroxyarylene and alkali. The rate constants and activation energies were determined for the reaction in alkaline, alcoholic, water-alcoholic and aqueous media, and a reaction mechanism has been proposed. It was found that the reactivity of oligohydroquinone exceeds that of the oligo-α-and aligo-β-naphthols and oligophenol during oxidation under similar conditions. It is shown that the oxidation of oligohydroxyarylenes is accompanied by the formation of phenoxyl, naphthoxyl and semiquinone type intermediate polyradicals. |
