The goal of this project is to explore the effects of COVID-19 on consumer behavior. Guided by principles from Fundamental Motives Theory and Life History Theory, we predict changes in what consumers want to buy due to a heightened threat of disease in their environment. However, due to COVID-19’s varying impact across sociodemographics, we are also interested in exploring the interplay between sociodemographic variables (such as age and SES) and purchasing behaviors. We measured participants’ reported changes in their desired and actual (exploratory) purchasing behavior across eleven categories of goods. This pre-registration covers the analysis of data from the first two sets of data of a multi-wave longitudinal study. Both pre-registered and exploratory hypotheses are included. |
