Neonatal platelets are described as hyporeactive [1, 2]. Hypothesized to be immature, they differ in many aspects from adult platelets: morphologically they have a similar size, but markedly less α-granules, less pseudopods, smaller glycogen deposits and less microtubular structures [3]. In function tests aggregation response particularly to epinephrine and collagen is reduced, and markers of platelet activation, analyzed by flow cytometry, show lower expression after activation with physiological agonists [4]. Realizing these facts neonatal platelets are mainly characterized by a low reserve capacity [5]. |
