The article concentrates on precursors to vulval squamous cell carcinoma, with brief description of precursors to malignant melanoma, and Paget's disease. A variety of terms for lesions linked with cancer have been used in the past; recent terminology is described. Non-neoplastic epithelial disorders (lichen sclerosus and/or squamous hyperplasia) and vulval intraepithelial neoplasia are found adjacent to carcinoma, and cases of progression have been described. Different features suggest two different forms of pre-cancer. Management of precursor lesions is discussed. |
