The final product of lymphoid cell differentiation in the thymus along common or separate (1) maturation pathways is the small lymphocyte. A minor, cortisone-resistant (CR), part of small thymic lymphocytes contributes to the generation of immunocompetent peripheral T cells, a high, cortisone-sensitive (CS), proportion of incompetent small cells appears to die within the thymus (2,3). Candidate (precursor) cells for the functionally various classes of T cells are to be found within the category of CR small thymic lymphocytes, which, in the present study, was analysed with physical and morphological methods. Evidence for a possible separation and identification of two subpopulations of CR small thymic lymphocytes will be presented. |
