Automatic object recognition is a difficult and as yet unsolved problem. There exist, however, a number of benign circumstances in which a great deal is known about all aspects of the problem--enough, in principle, to predict exactly the appearance of the image when given a small amount of information about a few objects present and their locations. In those case, it is rather straightforward to reverse the process and infer from the image the identity and locations of the objects.© (1994) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering.
