Test scores produced by psychological tests are extremely important because they are the basis on which to interpret an examinee’s performance. There are many different types of scores, and each has its own unique properties. Raw scores are not very useful for interpreting test performance but transformed scores are quite useful and so are covered in some detail. The two main approaches to score interpretation involve comparing an examinee’s test score to the scores of other people (norm-referenced interpretation) or to a preestablished criterion or cut-off (criterion-referenced interpretation). The type of interpretive approach and the kind of scores used to reflect test performance are selected based on the purpose of the test and the questions the examiner wants to answer. |
