True representation has to go beyond tokenism to address the problems of diversity within an industry. There must be a recognition of the problem, a recognition of the marketplace/consumers, and true diversity top to bottom, from managers to writers. Hiring consultants are but one way to begin to address these issues short term as companies build toward long-term solutions. My experience as a gamer and writer brought in to consult on the AAA Ubisoft game, Watch Dogs 2, is but one example of how this can be done. The bottom line is that as POC, we simply want to see ourselves—portrayed well and true—in the things we love. And we love to play games. |
