Popis: Publisher Summary The chapter describes the various South Asian cultural groups from both the cultural and ethnic domain and their perspectives on health and illness. The South Asian cultural groups on the basis of their religious practices are as follows: (1) Hinduism, (2) Islam, (3) Sikhism, (4) Christianity, (5) Jainism, and (6) Buddhism. The arrival of South Asians to Western countries has been through various direct and indirect routes and has been triggered by many factors, including sociopolitical (e.g., East Africa and Fiji), the search for a better quality of life, the urge to be with members of extended family who have already migrated, and general entrepreneurial zeal. The chapter describes the main models of medicine practiced among South Asian groups including Ayurveda, Siddha, and Unani. The western practitioners need to incorporate the indigenous Indian system of medicine along with biomedicine model of treatment for treating South Asian immigrants. There are certain other cultural aspects, such as the role of family, the view of self, and expectations from a health care provider, which will aid the health provider to understand the South Asian client better.
