The stacked elemental layer (S.E.L.) technique has been used to synthesise thin films of cadmium telluride (CdTe). This technique consists of depositing alternate layers of Te/Cd in the stoichiometric ratio needed to form CdTe and then annealing the stack to react the elements to form the compound. In this work the Cd and Te layers were deposited using thermal evaporation and the layers annealed in nitrogen at temperatures in the range 350–550°C for 15 minutes. Transmittance and reflectance data, X-ray diffraction data and scanning electron microscopy observations of the surface topology are given for the layers produced. This technique promises to be a low cost method for producing large areas of CdTe suitable for use in solar cell structures. |
