Popis: Marine magnetic data from 16 well-distributed profiles over Bay of Bengal were analysed to delineate the magnetic basement, which, in general, matches with the sediment thickness pattern. A series of high and low reliefs ride over a basement level of 11–12 km. The high associated with 85°E Ridge extends northward with an obliteration around 13°N parallel. Isolated depressions in this region and a NW–SE trending high between 11° and 15°N latitudes and 86° and 89°E longitudes are some of the features observed in the basement. The basement obtained from available seismic data across 13° latitude shows a good agreement with that derived from the present analysis. The deep basement in the Northeast conforms to the high sediment thickness. The undulations in the basement might be due to the stresses acting on the ocean floor at the time of break-up of Indian plate from Gondwanaland.
