Popis: | In this paper, a novel composite sandwich structure made entirely from self-reinforced PET (poly-ethylene terephthalate matrix & fiber) is studied as a competitive candidate for LVI (low velocity impact) due to the material’s apparently good energy absorption characteristics and core shape. An important advantage in using this ductile material for the cellular core and for the outer sheets is that the interface between them is done by using the same PET matrix, with no additional adhesives. The structure is also fully recyclable, thus reducing the impact on the environment. Another significant aspect is the unique core design, conceived to store a large amount of elastic deformation. This is useful in low velocity impact scenarios where initial shape recovery becomes important for appearance reasons (i.e. no visual damage after impact) and for functional reasons (i.e. recovering aerodynamic shape). The structure study implies an optimization algorithm for an LVI simulation to be set up based on the finite element method, connected to a design exploration software. By using the design space exploration process, the optimum parameter set for the cellular core can be obtained with less resources than by using the traditional trial and error scenarios and expose the relations between these parameters with no previous parametrical analytical study. |
