The subscriber identity module (SIM) is a core, mandatory component that is used in a GSM phone. SIM cards are also being utilized in CDMA phones for 4G or LTE service. A SIM is an integrated chip that stores authentication values for the subscriber. They come in different sizes and can also be embedded. Some wireless carriers allow SIM cards to be removed from one phone and used in another. SIMs may contain specific user-related data that could be evidential in nature. Users can elect to place security on the SIM's file system. The SIM may be examined independent of the mobile device, using a SIM card reader. Not all SIM file systems will contain the same values. The user-assigned phone number may or may not be stored on the SIM. For forensic Faraday purposes, a target SIM may be forensically cloned to allow access to a SIM-locked handset as well as network isolate (Faraday) the device. |
